Then and Now

Then... Now...
Then corn cutting Now combine harvester

A binder cut the corn, the entire

stem and seed head were left to dry in the field for 2-3 weeks.

The combine harvester cuts the corn. The seed is threshed out and stored in a large tank and the straw and chaff is pushed out the back and left in the field in lines ready to be baled.
Then cart
Then it was taken by cart to the threshing machine at West Lane.
Now combine tank
When the combine tank is full, the seed is deposited in a trailer using the unloading arm.
Then thresshing tank Now tractor
The threshing machine threshed
out the seed which was bagged up
by hand into two and a quarter
weight sacks (2521b). The straw
was stacked in a 'rick' and used
when necessary for bedding or feed.
The seed is taken by tractor and trailer to the West Lane grain store.
