Belted Galloways are a hardy breed which originate from the exposed uplands of Galloway in south west Scotland. They are well suited to rough grazing, whilst producing nutritionally rich milk for their calves and later converting into well marbled flavoursome beef. Belted Galloways have a double coat to protect them from the elements, a long haired outer coat which sheds the rain and snow and a soft undercoat providing warmth.
Our Galloways are black with the characteristic white belt, which encircles the body.
We bought 21 pedigree Belted Galloways in spring 2008 (as seen in the above photograph) to increase the herd number. We currently have 35 breeding cows, with another 33 heifers coming along as replacements in the next two years.
We keep the retired cows that continue to undertake important conservation grazing as part of our Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, two pedigree bulls and the steers. This brings our total to 155 Belted Galloway cattle on the farm.
Cattle are sold to like-minded farmers who are interested in keeping this native breed on the increase and for those with 'rough' grazing upon which other breeds would not thrive.
We also sell to butchers and restaurants who want grass fed, native breed, Farm Assured beef with the full traceability and provenance provided by Manor Farm Wotton.
Belted Galloway Beef Bag Scheme
A Beef Bag Scheme gives you the opportunity to buy the best of British beef direct from the farmer, right here in Wotton. High welfare standards, Farm Assured, full traceability of each animal from farm to fork and low food miles, giving excellent added value to our beef.
Selling the beef in this way ensures carcass balance and that the whole animal is sold enabling the process to be viable and sustainable.
We produce high quality Belted Galloway beef whilst taking a whole farm, sustainable approach to healthy food production, maintaining the historical landscape and conserving wildlife habitats.
Our 'Beltie' meat will be hung for 4 weeks allowing it to reach it's full potential and ensure that it is full of delicious flavour.
Further information about the scheme and cuts sold separately, can be found on the 'Local Produce' page.
