24th November 2007  Beef Box Scheme

It is 1.30am and I have just finished writing a flier for my Belted Galloway Beef Box Scheme!

Being passionate about British produce and the very high welfare standards required of UK farmers (especially compared to many other countries) I have decided to promote our naturally reared, farm assured and deliciously tasting Belted Galloway beef to discerning locals.

So here is the very first Box Scheme in Wotton:

Manor Farm, Belted Galloway Beef Box Scheme

A Box Scheme gives you the opportunity to buy the best of British beef, direct from the farmer, right here in Wotton. High welfare standards, farm assured, full traceability of each animal from farm to fork and low food miles, giving excellent added value to our beef.

We produce High quality Galloway beef whilst taking a whole farm, sustainable approach to healthy food production, maintaining the historical landscape and conserving wildlife habitats.

There will be a lot more work involved in the box scheme compared with sending the beast off to the abbatoir with the Fresian crosses; cutting, packaging and selling will be very time consuming but later when we meet the consumer it will give us the opportunity to talk about our work and the added value we bring to the countryside.

Belted Galloways are a hardy breed originating from the wilds of Scotland.  We have them grazing on natural pastures and chalk downland, where they convert rough grazing into lean, high quality meat. Their double thickness coat is an inch thicker than other cattle breeds and experiments have shown that this makes the Galloway 20% more efficient in it's feed conversion rate.

Farming shaped our Surrey Hills landscape since the earliest farmers settled here over 3,000 years ago and it is farming that continues to create and maintain the varied and beautiful landscape we enjoy today.

Buying Manor Farm Belted Galloway Beef helps to maintain a network of sustainable rural businesses and this in turn helps us to maintain a living and thriving countryside.

This first 'Beltie' should fill about 13 - 15 boxes and orders are being placed quite swifly. I won't know the precise number until the box filling day, which is December 10th. I am taking orders on a first come first served basis and if more boxes are available I will contact the next name on the order list.

So why not try some local, fresh, farm assured beef and help to keep Surrey Farming.
