The service of the combine harvester only began in July and unfortunately wasn’t completed in time to begin harvesting the wheat last week.

The main body was more or less serviced by last weekend, however they discovered that the cutter bar auger was bent and needed replacing.

It seems that a large rock must have been taken up into the combine last season damaging the auger and the ‘concave’ which is inside the combine harvester.

As the crops are cut, the reel on the header turns and scoops the entire crop towards the auger, which then feeds the crop up into the combine harvester where the grain is separated off from the chaff and straw at the convcave.

The auger is still in the header above, and below it has been removed.

The auger was ordered from Germany and was delayed crossing the channel; it was being fitted during the Defra visit, so maintenance and harvest preparation made another interesting topic.

The new auger has now been fitted but the mechanics will replace the concave at a later date.  The combine harvester is ready to begin harvesting but it's now raining heavily!
