Ashburnham Community School made another visit to the farm recently with a group of 6-7 year olds.  Mr.Acharya is a new teacher at the school and it was great to see his enthusiasm for learning spread amongst the children.

A particular favourite was meeting the new editions to the farm!

In the same week we hosted two GCSE groups from The Royal Alexandra and Albert School. These 15-16 year olds are studying Geography and were keen to learn as much as possible about a working farm.

We covered the history of EDG Matthews and how he came to farm in Wotton, the differences in farming here 1935-2013, the current farming enterprise including the beef and suckler herds, soil types and crops grown, viability, and environmental stewardship.

We hope the visit has inspired the pupils and given them a good basis on which to work towards their GCSE.

Colin walked the maize crop on Thursday and brought a selection of maize cobs to show the variation in ripeness according to field and soil type. Contractors will cut the first 100 acres for silage this week.

Laurence is harvesting oilseed rape this weekend, although tomorrow morning he will be off to the Surrey County Agricultural Society Ploughing Match and Country Fair at Loseley where he is a steward each year.  Let’s hope the weather remains dry for the ploughing match and later in the day back on the combine.
