It’s a stunning day and I’m working along a hedgerow in Homefield. As the weather tries to emulate summer the birds are singing their hearts out in the sunshine but struggling to rise above the noise of the A25.  The hedge is alive with black caps and robins this morning and pairs of skylarks are doing their usual acrobatics overhead.

The sad news this morning is that after a long life, my favourite hen has died.  We had a super group of children from Ashburnham Community School in April and ‘Henny’ was as obliging as ever; allowing the children to stroke her and see close – up the anatomy of a hen. I shall miss her following me around while gardening and even hanging washing; she’d be there!
