March 1st was a beautiful spring day and saw the safe arrival of the very first calf sired by Carsluith Ethelred, our Belted Galloway bull.

This is a Harriet with her well marked heifer calf called Wotton Pearl.

Cattle must have two ear tags so we use a cattle 'grab' to catch the calf and this provides a safe area in which we can work with the mother outside the cage.

It was a pleasure to meet a group of ladies on a circular walk and have a brief chat about the herd and a few other farming matters. When they saw the cattle in the field, one of the ladies explained to her friends about some delicious Belted Galloway beef she had eaten at The Jolly Farmer at Betchworth; the lady was enthusing about Manor Farm Belted Galloway beef which I had supplied to the Jolly Farmer, so that was great to hear!
