Cattle welfare is of paramount importance from the time the calves arrive on farm through to their journey by haulier to abbatoir almost two years later.

We insist that our animals are slaughtered the same day they go to the abbatoir to ensure they are not left waiting around in a strange environment and without food.

Our local abbatoir is still under additional restrictions because it is within the Foot and Mouth Surveillance Zone so instead of using this abbatoir, 41 steers were loaded onto a lorry early today and made their way to an abbatoir in South Wales.

Now that animal movements can resume on the farm, 19 cattle moved from a large area of grass at Abinger Bottom, up to a field near the the cress beds freeing up the 70 acres of grass to 110 head of cattle from three fields which had been eaten right down.

We have four Italian made Same tractors and a large 300 horse power Ford. Having one Same tractor out of action at this time of year is unfortunate, but today the gearbox blew on another of the Same's just when it's needed most.

All the tractors are all fairly old, one from 1993 and another 1999 and the two which have broken down have done about 7,000 hours work.
