This week we have taken the loss of two steers that had been ready to go to slaughter. The barn in which they were housed was mucked out and because the weather was so wet, the moisture in the air left the concrete floor very slippery. The cattle were excited as the fresh straw was being spread in the barn and two steers slipped and fell.  One dislocated it's shoulder and the other fell and smashed his knee.  The vet was called to put both animals down.

The cost of raising a steer over almost two years is in the region of £550 and currently they would have sold for about £600. The vet will charge £15 to put an animal down plus 15 pence per kilo. The total outlay per steer has been £655 so instead of £50 profit per head over two years, we lost £1,310 in one day!
